Cairns Marine operates on the Great Barrier Reef within the QLD Marine Aquarium Fish Fishery and the QLD Coral Fishery; and in the Coral Sea Fishery, which is the vast expanse of ocean east of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park to the furthest extent of Australia’s territorial waters.
These fisheries are characterised by their collection method, which is primarily by hand or by using hand-held implements. Whilst the fisheries are managed separately, they are integrally linked with many operators working across both Queensland fisheries and two operators, including Cairns Marine, working across all three fisheries. The entire industry based in Queensland comprises little more than 30 businesses of substantially disparate scale.
